Shooting themed portraits outdoors, on-location in Grand Teton National Park
While traveling through Grand Teton National Park with Caryn Esplin, I photographed several outdoor-themed portraits. The models used some amazing props that not only added color and texture, but also added to the aesthetic of the outdoor photographs.
This photograph of Natalia Perez was taken near the Tetons at Mormon Row Historic District.
All of my Themed portraits were taken outdoors, using only natural light and light reflectors. I was able to pull off some great photos without any added lighting.
I love the texture of the fur in this shot of the gorgeous Vanessa Godfrey:
Next is a themed portrait of Douglas Phan. He’s wearing the same fur that Vanessa had on in the previous photo. It amazes me how different the texture looks in direct sunlight:
These next two outdoor shots are hiker-themed. Both were intended to showcase the backpack for use in advertising photography. Only natural lighting was used for these two photos.

Even though this next shot wasn’t taken during the Grand Teton National Park shoot, I have to sneak one more photo in this post about on-location themed portraits. This last photo was taken during a trip to Bannack Ghost Town, Montana the following weekend. It started to snow while we were in Bannack National Park, making for an awesome wintery background. It was fun to capture snow-fall and see the neat texture the snow created on top of the Indian headdress:
It’s possible to get some fantastic on-location themed portraits using only a light reflector and the natural lighting.
