A Woodcut Print by Christie Bryant
Artemis is also known as the Goddess of Chasity and Childbirth. She is not only powerful but virtuous as well. Artemis is also known as Goddess of Wild Animals, Wilderness, and the Moon. She is identified as the goddess, Diana by the Romans.
When Artemis turned three years old, she asked her father, Zeus for six wishes, one of which was for a bow and arrow. her bow was named, Khryselakatos, meaning “Of the Golden Shaft.”
Based on Greek Period vase paintings of Artemis: Goddess of the Hunt, in this woodcut print, Artemis’ white-gold bow is depicted in the shape of antlers to show her connection to wild animals, while her arrows are made of starlight to show her connection to the moon. The glowing green color behind the bow and arrow represents Artemis’ connection to the wilderness.
